In this article, they get their own section monsters have a more dominant presence in this one book than any other individual book in the series.

Talsorian GamesLinks. The only thing that's mentioned in the books about it, is that Witchers typically carry two swords, one silver and one iron. Just as silver is lethal for some monsters, iron is lethal to others, but it can't be just any iron, has to be from a meteorite.
Both are for monsters. For most of the Saga a silver sword was never mentioned, but he got a nice Mahakam Rune Sihil from Zoltan that he used a lot until he died.In the games they just decided to make it silver for magical creatures and Steel for mundane creatures and people. There's no reason a silver sword wouldn't be effective against humans, it's just that it's an expensive sword, silver plated with a steel core, and since silver is a fairly soft metal, you'd probably wreck it when parrying sword blows or striking against shields or armor. Its just for gameplay mechanics.
In the books the reason they carry a steel and silver sword is because silver is effective against some monsters and steel is more effective for others.People in the book claim that witchers carry the steel sword for people but it's not the reason they do. That being said steel is stronger than silver so I think it would be a preferable option against people wearing armour, but as you know being a person anything sharp and pointy is capable of killing you. In the books when Geralt is asked about the swords, he says that both swords are for monsters. Some are very sensitive and susceptible to silver, some are weak to iron. The false fact that the steel sword is for killing human is exactly that - false. To be honest, now that I think about it this is something that the games got wrong. Or maybe I don't remember the games right?Answering a question directly - if you stab someone with a big sword, whether it's steel or silver, it will hurt him anyways.
However, a silver blade might be weaker in a swordfight due to different capabilities of the material itself. But that seems like reaching too far. In the books, silver has special magical/anti-magical properties. For example, Geralt's silver witcher amulet when placed on a mimic stops it from shape shifting.
Geralt's jackets are studded with silver. There is even one Paladin who carries a silver shield during a dragon fight.
